Our immune system is essential for our survival. It is equipped to mount an immune response if it encounters a pathogen as well as to self-clean itself. In Chinese Medicine, we refer to this as “Wei Qi". This is the protective energy and life-force circulating throughout the body. Cupping therapy has been around for thousands of years. It is one of many tools to help the body’s Wei Qi get moving again once outside forces block the natural flow of energy. It has gained a lot of public acknowledgement recently, for good reason.
Cupping involves gently heating glass cups and placing them on the body. As they cool, they create a mini vacuum chamber that creates suction. It is similar to getting a massage except that instead of inward compression, it is an outward compression caused by suction. It doesn’t hurt, but you might feel some momentary tension with the application of the cups followed by a huge muscular and fascial release. Some therapists use mechanical suction, but at Linden Acupuncture, I apply a flame to the glass cups, the more traditional method. Plus, it is more dramatic!
Cupping prevents stagnation and removes toxins, lactic acid, metabolic waste, and cellular debris from the muscles and tissues. It stimulates blood flow and increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the body's muscles and connective tissues. Cupping alleviates lung congestion and phlegm after respiratory illnesses such as colds and flus as well. It is a powerful way to clear the lungs of environmental pollution, which is so important in the Los Angeles area and other areas with intense smog. Sometimes cupping leaves bruises but don't worry, the marks fade quickly!
Here’s a quick recap:
➡️ Cupping increases oxygen which brings nutrients and fresh blood to the tissues and muscles.
➡️ Cupping is a great way to relieve stress and support regular detoxification.
➡️ Cupping clears the lungs of environmental pollution and is great at alleviating lung congestion and phlegm after respiratory illnesses such as colds and flus.
➡️ Cupping sometimes leaves a mark, but they clear up quickly.
Cupping is one of many tools I use to assist the immune system in doing its job of keeping you well. It can be scheduled as a stand alone treatment or incorporated into an acupuncture session.
